Thoroughly Spoilt At Bovey Castle Spa

Luckily for me, my friend Maddy turned 21 and decided to treat a group of us girls to a spa day at Bovey Castle. We were all incredibly excited as we were whisked off into the depths of the Devonshire countryside, where Bovey lies nestled between rolling hills and a perfectly manicured golf course (cheekily googled this snap, as my iphone would never be able to do it justice).

Upon our arrival, to our utmost delight, we were greeted by a very well-dressed young man holding an umbrella: a generous touch as it was pouring with rain (who I unfortunately forgot to photograph as I was so overwhelmed by his chivalry). After this fantastic first impression, Bovey Castle only got better, as in the entrance they had dog bowls, wellies and hunting gear which established a countryside chic atmosphere. Moreover, Bovey is a dog-friendly hotel, and I immediately began to daydream of countryside walks with my dogs around it's spacious grounds... Maybe one day in the future!

Once we were all inside we were led into a cream lounge which boasted the most amazing chandelier, and our bags of robes and slippers were distributed.

The next stop was the spa, which was heavenly. I decided beforehand to book a back massage, as a reward for the long hours spent hunched over revision in the library. It was a wonderful decision, and my massuese Siobhan made me feel completely rejuvenated - it was utterly blissful. I think my face in my photo sums it all up!

After experiencing total relaxation we headed downstairs to the pool, which had really comfy sun-beds overlooking to acres of lush green grass and the hotel grounds. The room was heated to the perfect temperature and complimented the massage perfectly as we lazed around on the loungers for the rest of the afternoon, moving only to dip into the pool or to pop into the sauna and steam room. Absolutely perfect.

Once showering and reluctantly changing back into our clothes (it was a painful moment as we surrendered our dressing gowns) we had a cream tea in the Old Library, yet another magnificent and tastefully decorated room. Greeted with champagne, we sat by a roaring fire as our scones were prepared.

Cheekily we subsequently indulged even more as we ate deliciously light scones, and guiltily scooped up strawberry jam and clotted cream, whilst overlooking the beautiful scenery both outside and in the room!

Finally we were full, and reluctantly left our snug room. It was the perfect end to the most gorgeous of days, and we were all rather sad to leave Bovey behind as we drove down the winding driveway back to our (slightly less glamorous) home in Exeter. I am so grateful for Maddy and Bridget for organising such a lovely day.

Happy 21st Madeleine!

  1. your vacation looks wonderful! the pictures said it all ... especially the post massage bliss! I too love getting massages when I go on vacation, my own personal experiences is that most places don't do a good job. they are there to alleviate the tension, not cause pain! or perhaps not going deep enough to create a desired effect.. everyone wants a certain outcome, and its at times hard to assume what people like. I had an ayurvedic massage 10yrs ago, was so impressed I learned this technique for my clients.... IF you ever see this massage offered, I suggest you do yourself a favor and try it.
