Cake Cretins

Procrastination is a word that students can't seem to get enough of. In the midst of revision, it suddenly seems that everyone has become obsessed with frantic texting, facebook-everything, whatsapping, tweeting, and of course snapchatting. As a fan of all of the above, and adding 'blogging' to my list, it seems that concentrating on revision has become impossible.

Perhaps what is even more disconcerting is that all of my friends have moved en mass onto campus - thus the library has now become a social hub (of inactivity). I look like a tramp, and suddenly see everyone I know... Not an ideal situation. To make matters worse, there are the cake-sellers.

Introducing a thought-provoking commentary about people selling cakes in the library.

Yes, it is pretty much a given. Pick any day of the week and stumble into the Exeter University 'marketplace', I guarantee that there will be someone lurking behind a table boasting a glamorous array of home-made goodies (they are usually located near the table covered in unhelpful leaflets that are generically entitled 'coping with exam stress'). What I find stressful about this situation however is not dealing with my exams. No. It is the cakes. In the run-up towards summer, when I am feeling tired and low, I do not need such blatant and outrageous temptation!
The cakes always look delicious. My options are limited.

Do I succumb to the cakes (with the added issues of calories and cost)?
Or, do I sadly sidle past with my boxes of 'brain foods' - blueberries, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds?

I either ignore the promises of a sweet sugar high, or give in and feel even more miserable later as the sugar runs out and all I am left with is a tiny box of seeds.

I spent hours considering my dilemma, but there is only one conclusion. It is an impossible situation. A catch-22.

These cake menaces really ought to consider the feelings of young women like me before they sit there smugly smiling and showcasing their delightful baked goodies (right before bikini season, to add insult to the case).

Rant over. And if you're wondering, I gave in.

Here is the magnificent creature I ate earlier, the cookie monster cupcake!
